Finding affordable housing is an important concern for most people, and single parents in particular. They have children to provide for and often no partner to help them financially. In most cases single mothers earn less and therefore money will most likely be an issue. The fact that a single parent household will usually have less income and more responsibility for the parent in charge usually means that finding and paying for housing is a stressful factor in the life of a single mother. Fortunately there are options available in the form of programs that provide rental assistance for single mothers in need of an affordable place to live.
Section 8 housing
This refers to Section 8 of the united States Housing Act of 1937. Section 8 housing is housing for low income people where the government provides them with rental assistance by paying their landlords. The assistance paid can either be tenant based or project based. In tenant based rental assistance the tenant may move from one home to another and still be provided with rental assistance. In project based assistance the landlord reserves homes for people who are receiving section 8 assistance. The government will pay the difference between what the tenant pays and the rent due. The purpose is to provide low income tenants with places to live. Taking advantage of section 8 housing is an option available for single mothers who are struggling to stay afloat financially. Unfortunately, the neighborhoods with project based Section 8 housing are often not the best ones in which to raise children, therefore using this form of rental assistance should be a short term solution. It should be noted that once a person being assisted with their rent leaves their government-subsidized home they will no longer be eligible for Section 8 housing. Section 8 specifies that the housing provided to low income tenants must meet a minimum standard.
Emergency rental assistance for single mothers
Many charities like the Salvation Army, also provide rental assistance, though not usually on a long term basis. The purpose is usually to tide a person over in the short term by paying an emergency sum for rent or for a mortgage payment.
Individual counties may also have some form of rental assistance for single mothers and other low income residents. In order to access this help it may be necessary to go to the local county office and apply.
The government’s Housing and Community Facilities Development Program
This is for rural Americans with low incomes and it provides them the opportunity for home ownership and/or home repair. In some cases it also provides for rental assistance.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development
In addition to helping people with loans to purchase homes, HUD provides both housing advice and rental assistance for single mothers as well as generally to all low income families. This may also be a viable option for a single mother as it allows her to choose the home that she wants and HUD will help her to pay for it. It should be noted that HUD does not actually own any housing.
